Parents First-Year Seminar Refresher Course

Parents –

Welcome to the Parents First-Year Seminar refresher course! We had several parents ask this summer if there would be a chance to review the information presented during the parent session this past June at New Student Orientation. Others asked if there would be a chance to share this information with their student or other family members at a later date. This video series offers just that opportunity! So, as we revisit what to expect during the upcoming fall semester, grab your family and explore the video clips below that give an overview and break down of the first semester in college starting in July and taking you through December. It is an informative look at college life on WVU’s campus so that you can prepare and know what to expect in the coming months!

Chapter 1- Empower

As you work to empower your student to start taking the lead on their college career, this chapter reminds viewers of items to wrap up before your student heads to Morgantown! Check out this chapter to assure you have completed any homework items during this period of transition. This also points to valuable tools such as the syllabus – which again serves as the ever important contract between instructors and students outlining everything from grade expectations to attendance policies – to the FERPA policy as well as information on academic advising tips among other things check out video of Chapter 1. Chapter 2 – Engage

Move-in Day is upon us and this opens the opportunity for your student and you as parents to begin engaging in different ways! This chapter reviews all the resources to help both you and your student during those first days and nights away as well as throughout the year – for parents these include Summer Send Offs as well as Fall Family Weekend. Make note of these resources or simply note the Parent Helpline information should you have other questions! Check out video of Chapter 2. (17:42)

Chapter 3 – Educate

The main focus and reason why your student is in college is based around obtaining a quality education. As your student starts to settle into routines and establish habits on campus – this chapter gives an overview of the academic expectations and protocols on our campus including information on the First Year Academy taking place move-in weekend to tips for success in the classroom. As the academic rigors and reality of college settles in, I hope you’ve been paying attention as well because it is now time for your Pop Quiz!

Chapter 4 – Expectations

Around mid-semester is a busy time with various academic deadlines, and scheduling for the next term underway. We call October Stress Dump Month and it makes a great time to check back in on the expectations that have been set. This chapter will give some points for consideration of some of the topics that may be coming up or discussions that need to happen. From reminders of academic supports, judicial information, transportation details or housing conversations, be sure to make note of this information and resources to help your student make wise choices during this chapter. Be prepared for potential upcoming conversations! Check out video of Chapter 4. (5:44)

Chapter 5 – Experience

As the term wraps up, we reflect on and look ahead to the hundreds of opportunities and experiences that will help to craft your student’s WVU Journey. While during the summer months we look ahead to what will be, before you know it December will be here and one semester will be in the books. This glimpse ahead takes us through some WVU’s graduates journeys and insights into how they paved their way to success and growth at WVU. By looking forward we set our sights on Destination Graduation before welcoming the parents of our newest Mountaineers!
