PARENT UNIVERSITY 101 REFRESHER COURSE
Parents –
Welcome to the Parent UNIV 101 refresher course! We had several parents ask this summer if there would be a chance to review the information presented during this session this past June at New Student Orientation. Others asked if there would be a chance to share this information with their student or other family members at a later date. This video series offers just that opportunity! So, as we revisit what to expect during the upcoming fall semester, grab your family and explore the video clips below that give a monthly break down of the first semester in college starting in July and taking you through December. It is an informative look at college life on WVU’s campus so that you can prepare and know what to expect in the coming months!
Chapter 1- July: Transitioning – As you wrap up loose ends before your student heads to Morgantown – check out this chapter to assure you have completed any homework items during this period of transition. For a review of the syllabus – which again serves as the ever important contract between instructors and students outlining grade expectations to absence policies – to FERPA or information of Disability Services accommodations among other things – check out video of Chapter 1. Chapter 2 – August: Settling In – Move-in Day is upon us! This chapter reviews all the resources to help your student settle in on campus. From residential resources, to the Student Advocate, an academic advising overview to Welcome Week, this will give you all the details and resources to help during those first days and nights away. Make notes of all these resources or simply note the Parent Helpline information should you have other questions! Check out video of Chapter 2. (17:42)
Chapter 3 – September: Getting Acclimated – As your student enter their second and third weeks in the semester they will be starting to settle into routines and establish habits. This chapter looks at the wealth of health, social and academic resources available to your student as they become members of our Morgantown community! Also as your students will be studying for and preparing to face the reality of midterm exams week eight in early October, I hope you’ve been paying attention as well because it is now time for your Midterm Exam! Check out video of Chapter 3. (8:02)
Chapter 4 – October: Reality Sets in, Midterm Review – With midterm reports coming out, academic deadlines, and scheduling for the next term underway – we call October Stress Dump Month making it a great time for a visit to campus for Fall Family Weekend. Also with no days off in October, this is a long month meaning we often see an increase in judicial affairs. Be sure to review those processes and policies handled by the Office of Judicial Affairs with us. Check out video of Chapter 4. (5:44)
Chapters 5/6 – November: Looking Ahead AND December: Finals Review, Making the Grade – In November and December as students wrap up their first term, remember this is the time to look ahead. Scheduling and class registration for the next term will be going on but this may also be when conversations about housing for next fall take place, so refer to those free housing resources to help your student make wise choices! Also remember students will be gearing up for their first week off when residence halls close during Thanksgiving break. But don’t let them forget why they are here – finals will be looming and for you as well! We will wrap up with your Final Exam before welcoming the parents of our newest Mountaineers! Check out video of Chapter 5 & 6. (11:35)
